Qual è la storia dell'immobile? The lighthouse on the grounds of HI Point Montara Lighthouse hostel may be small, but it’s the only American lighthouse known to have beckoned seafarers on both coasts of the country. Replacing the original lighthouse at Mayo’s Beach in Wellfleet, MA in 1881, the lighthouse was taken down in 1925 and, everyone believed, destroyed for scrap metal. It wasn’t until the following century that researchers discovered the disappeared Cape Cod lighthouse had actually been moved to the West Coast. The lighthouse was installed at Point Montara in 1928, yet no one knows exactly how – or why – it made its cross-country journey. One rumour has it voyaging all the way around Cape Horn to arrive at its final destination at Montara, CA. Point Montara had been established in 1875 as a fog signal station, doing its best to warn approaching ships of its craggy coastline with the addition of a red kerosene lantern in 1900. Eventually the lantern was upgraded to a fourth order Fresnel lens in 1912 with a stick work tower and lantern house. The Point Montara hostel’s other buildings have their own rich histories, starting long before the arrival of the cast-iron lighthouse. The United States government established a fog signal at Point Montara in 1875 in response to two high-profile crashes along the coast in the decade before. Initially, the site housed nothing but a 12-inch steam whistle, whose five-second blast could be heard from 15 miles away, and a two-story, Victorian-style innkeeper’s dwelling that still stands on the hostel grounds and serves as housing for hostel staff. In 1902, a large barn-style fog signal building was added; a secondary building used for a workshop and storage went up around the same time. Today, the same fog signal building and annex houses the hostel’s private rooms, and a large common area used for movie screenings and other hostel group gatherings. The annex building has been modernized and outfitted with private rooms and guest bathrooms. A third building, where today you’ll find the hostel’s kitchens, lounge, and most of its guest rooms*, went up in 1961 to house members of the U.S. Coast Guard. 1942-1945 Point Montara became an Anti-aircraft training Center. This was a top secret facility operated by the U S Navy during WWII it contained 48 structures, housed 1,500 men, trained 320,000 Navel Sailors and Merchant Marines on the latest technology in Anti-aircraft Systems and was progressive in the use of WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) and radio-controlled drones for live-fire training.
The 1961 building was barely used for a decade when the entire station was automated and the buildings were abandoned.
This amazing property began welcoming travelers in 1980 after HI-USA (then AYH), the U.S. Coast Guard, the California Coastal Commission, the California Coastal Conservancy and California State Parks worked together to open a hostel here. The location was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991 and is in a Marine Protected Area. Today, operated by HI-USA it’s the perfect escape for history buffs and lighthouse enthusiasts, as well as anyone else who loves the seaside and the great outdoors.

Qual è la storia dell'immobile? The main house of Mesón de Leyendas has gone through different stages during its existence, part of its history is recorded in the books of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). This place was the main inn and meson of the town about 200 years ago, although it is believed that the property is older, a fact that inspired its name and its concept. Travelers who visited this area came to stay in this place. You can still see one of the original columns where the horses were tied so that they drank from the water well that is also preserved and that connects with a natural spring under several properties in the center of Valle de Bravo. During the conditioning of the well, elements from the period of the Mexican revolution were found, such as bullets, coins and belongings of the time. Some archaeological pieces from older periods were also found on the ground, such as the carved stones with eagle wings in our garden. These facts led to the conditioning of the hotel being planned respecting almost 100% the structure and design of the construction. The house shows elements of the original building such as doors, floors and adobe walls typical of the time. The place went from being an inn to a convent for the order of the Carmelite mothers at the end of the last century. During this period it was also known as the town's mill. From this stage we can find a curious tombstone on one of our balconies and many of the original stones of the mill are distributed on the floor of our garden and dining room. Later it was a property inhabited by different families. On different dates, collectors and plastic artists lived here, who used part of the house as their workshop/studio and source of inspiration. Among them is the English artist Valetta Swann, one of the great women of muralism in Mexico and Aurora López Díaz, a Mexican painter, a period during which the property was known as "La Casa de los Monos", from this stage you can still see a plaque at the entrance. We can find some of Aurora's works in the hotel, such as her portrait located in the reception, as well as an invitation to one of her many exhibitions.

Qual è la storia dell'immobile? Politician and sea captain Joseph Barss Sr. built his family home in 1798. With three-storeys, four rooms per floor, and a fireplace in every room, the Barss home was one of the largest in Liverpool. It still stands today and is part of Lane’s Privateer Inn, with original wooden beams found in front desk reception, the gourmet shop, and the corridor leading to the restaurant/pub.
Inheriting the family home from his father, Captain Joseph Barss Jr. lived in the Barss mansion with his wife Olivia and nine children until after the War of 1812. Often considered one of the most successful and well-known privateers, Barss captained the Liverpool Packet, capturing at least 50 enemy vessels. In 1813, following battle with an American ship that far out-sized and out-gunned them, Barss surrendered the Packet. After several months of harsh imprisonment, Barss was released on the condition he never command another privateer vessel. After the war, Barss settled in Kentville, NS. He passed away August 3, 1824, and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery (Kentville). A fantastic exhibit on Barss, Privateering, and a replica of the Liverpool Packet are on display at the Queens County Museum here in Liverpool. You can climb aboard the Packet and learn all there is to know about Privateering in Liverpool.
Ci sono ospiti importanti o proprietari precedenti che meritano di essere menzionati? In 1947 Edgar and Helen Lane purchased a neglected rooming house with an eight hole outhouse in the backyard. This building was the former Barss mansion on Bristol Avenue.
The building was renovated to include a family apartment and the largest furniture store on the South Shore, which was located on the first floor. Folks crowded Bristol Ave. to catch a glimpse of I Love Lucy or Ed Sullivan on the snowy television in the front windows while Ed and son Ron wrestled with the giant antennae on the roof.
The Lanes have always been a family of entrepreneurs and also opened a beauty salon, jewellery store, gift shop and apartments in the old Barss Mansion.
In 1962, the Lanes decided to shift business models. They closed the furniture store and expanded the existing structure, adding hotel rooms, a restaurant, banquet room, and coffee shop.
Son, Ron Lane and his growing family relocated from Whitehorse to help with the ever-increasing family business. For many years, Ron ran the business while raising nine children with his beloved wife Carol. He also involved himself in local politics; Ron was mayor of Liverpool from 1985-96. Ron was a founder of Privateer Days which takes place every June in Liverpool.
The third generation, Ron and Carol's children Susan and Terry worked together to manage Lane’s Privateer Inn. Snug Harbour Books opened in 1994 and Snug Harbour Gourmet Shop in 1998.
